Cancer Care Satellite Centre for Haflong

Haflong — the hill town and district headquarters of Dima Hasao — is set to get a cancer care satellite centre by February, offering specialised services much closer to remote communities.
Dima Hasao residents currently lack specialised oncology facilities, forcing patients to travel long distances to Silchar or Guwahati for medical treatment. The CCHRC, under Dr Kannan’s leadership since 2007, provides free or subsidised treatment to thousands of patients annually and has established similar satellite centres elsewhere.
The Haflong facility will focus on early detection, chemotherapy, palliative care and regular follow-ups, reducing travel, financial stress, and treatment delays for low-income families.
Key Details regarding the Satellite Centre:
- Purpose: To offer localized cancer services, reducing the burden of travel for diagnosis and treatment, such as chemotherapy.
- Target Population: Residents of Dima Hasao and surrounding hilly areas.
- Infrastructure: The centre is designed to provide comprehensive care and support to cancer patients.
- Context: This initiative is part of a larger, state-wide effort to enhance cancer care accessibility, similar to initiatives supported by the Assam Cancer Care Foundation, bringing services closer to patients’ homes
