Chhattisgarh’s Balod Becomes India’s First Officially Child Marriage-Free District

The state of Chhattisgarh has made a remarkable stride in social reform by officially declaring Balod district as the first child marriage-free district in India. This significant achievement is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Child Marriage-Free India’ campaign, which kicked off in August 2024. For two straight years, Balod has reported zero cases of child marriage. The district’s 436 gram panchayats and nine urban bodies have proudly received formal certificates to confirm this status. This accomplishment is viewed as a shining example for other regions striving to eliminate child marriage.

Background and Campaign

The ‘Child Marriage-Free India’ campaign was launched in August 2024 with the goal of eradicating child marriage across the country. It focuses on safeguarding children’s rights and fostering social development. The Chhattisgarh government has made this initiative a top priority, integrating it into its social policy. The campaign includes legal enforcement, awareness initiatives, and active community involvement.

Milestone Achievement:

• Zero Cases in Two Years: Over the last two years, the district has proudly reported no instances of child marriage.

• Verification Process: Following thorough document checks and legal procedures, all 436 gram panchayats and nine urban bodies in Balod have been officially recognized as child marriage-free.

• Community Role: Local leaders and families have played a vital role in raising awareness and ensuring everyone follows the rules.
