Daily Current Affairs – 10 July 2025

The Andhra Pradesh Government launched an initiative – ‘Digi-Lakshmi’ – on June 30, 2025 to assist the urban poor women who want to establish themselves as digital service providers. The state plans to set up 9,034 Common Service Centres (CSCs) in Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). This is a significant move towards establishing digital employment and women-owned businesses.

What is the Digi-Lakshmi Scheme?

Digi-Lakshmi is aimed at providing women from Self-Help Groups (SHGs) a path to become small businesses. These women will establish digital kiosks (ATOM Kiosks) by delivering nearly 250 public services – bill payments, certificates, application for various schemes, etc. Digi-Lakshmi is part of a broader plan namely ‘One Family, One Entrepreneurs’ (OF-OE) focused on encouraging urban women to become entrepreneurs.

Who will run the Centres?

In order for these services centres to be developed, women must meet specific criteria:

• Be within the age of 21 – 40 years

• Be married and settled in the area

• Have been an active SHG member for at least 3 years

• Be from a graduate background along with a basic understanding of technology

Each women would receive training and handholding from the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA). They can also avail loans between ₹2 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh to initiate running the centres.

Government Participation and Future Action

The scheme was officially launched by MA&UD Department. The order (G.O. MS. No. 117) was issued by S. Suresh Kumar, PP. The Mission Director, MEPMA is going to be in charge the execution of the scheme. These centres will create digital jobs for urban poor women and deliver services to the public.

The objective is to make SHG women self-sustaining and facilitate women’s small businesses in cities and towns throughout Andhra Pradesh.

Swissmedic, the medical authority of Switzerland, approved a new malaria treatment that has been specifically designed for small infants. The treatment, developed by Novartis, received approval on July 9, 2025, to treat babies who weigh between 2 and 5 kilograms. This approval is significant, as malaria contributes to innumerable child fatalities, particularly in Africa.

An Important Step for Infant Health

Novartis is a pharmaceutical company based in Basel, Switzerland. The new medicine is the first malaria treatment to be approved for very young infants, which represents an important step for protecting the youngest and most vulnerable children. The approval took place under the fast-track process of Swissmedic, done in close coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO). Depending on the treatment, the process allows the agency to fast-track medicines intended for importing to countries in the world where development is slower and progress can take longer.

Why This is Important for Africa

In 2023, malaria was estimated to have claimed 597,000 lives worldwide, with 95% of fatalities occurring in Africa. Children aged under five years were impacted more than any other age group. Although the disease normally impacts children between three and six months, access to safe and effective treatment options, including access to the specific medicine, should also be available to infants. Up until this point, infants have only been able to access medicines used for older children, which was a “suboptimal” solution for experts.

Expert Opinions and Companies Plan

Quique Bassat, malaria specialist at ISGlobal (Barcelona Institute for Global Health), has stated that the drug is both safe and efficacious. It should facilitate treatment for infants in a safer and simpler way.

Ruairidh Villar, spokesperson for Novartis, said eight African countries have been involved in the review of the drug and are set to approve it within 90 days. Novartis intends to sell the drug largely at no profit in the countries with significant malaria.

U.S.-based chip manufacturer Nvidia achieved a significant accomplishment when it became the first publicly traded company to surpass $4 trillion in its market value. This demonstrates how valuable Nvidia and the technology sector have become to the total U.S. stock market. A significant factor in Nvidia’s rapid ascendance is that it is increasingly becoming a major contributor to some of the key market indexes.

Nvidia’s Rapid Growth

Nvidia’s share price has increased substantially over the past couple of years. Since October 2022, Nvidia’s share price has increased about 1,350%, and has risen 22% in 2025, versus 6 percent for the S&P 500. The fact that it took just over one year for Nvidia to move from $3 trillion to $4 trillion in market value is a significant indication of its rate of growth.

Importance of Winning Market Shares

Due to it’s substantial market value, Nvidia is now one of the largest components of the S&P 500 index, comprising about 7.5% of this meaningful measure of the U.S. stock market. Nvidia’s market share is also large within the popular indices such as the Invesco QQQ ETF and the Philadelphia Semiconductor index. Due to these considerable market shares, Nvidia possesses significant weight and therefore influence on the performance of these funds and indexes.

Dominance in tech sector

Nvidia is not alone at the top. Nvidia’s shares are a little larger than Microsoft ($3.7 trillion) with Apple’s valuation currently at $3.1 trillion. Together with Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Broadcom (the 7 largest companies), the technology sector now accounts for roughly one-third of the S&P 500. The technology sector is now the largest sector by market value in the U.S. stock market, almost equal to where it was approaching the peak in 2000, the prior dot-com boom.

On July 9, 2025, INS Nistar, India’s first indigenously designed and built Diving Support Vessel (DSV), was accepted into the Indian Navy. Built in Visakhapatnam by Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), the acquisition of the ship will facilitate deep sea diving and rescue operations for the Navy. This development is a significant milestone for the Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat support programs.

Built for India’s Deep Diving Support Operations

INS Nistar has been designed and built entirely in India, with some 75 per cent local content. It has been constructed in accordance with the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) rules of construction. This represents an increasing capacity for India to be able to build advanced warships self-sufficiently.

The name Nistar comes from the Sanskrit language and means rescue or salvation. The Nistar is 118 m in length and weighs approximately 10,000 tonnes, plus it contains modern diving equipment. It has the ability, to conduct saturation diving up to 300 metres, while also providing a side diving stage for diving up to 75 metres.

Advanced Deep Sea Rescue and Support Capabilities

INS Nistar will support the Deep Submergence Rescue Vessel (DSRV) and act as the “Mother Ship” to support rescuing personnel from submarines trapped underwater. The ship also carries Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) that can operate as deep as 1000 metres to support divers and underwater salvage capabilities.

Such advanced deep sea support is only found in a few of the world’s leading navies. Indian Navy’s Nistar, now enables the Indian Navy capabilities to respond to underwater emergencies at a much faster rate with advanced technologies.

On July 7, 2025, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launched the 11th India Maize Summit in New Delhi, organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR). He announced the government’s new outlook in “Maize Revolution” to improve farmer livelihood, increase maize production, and strengthen sustainable agriculture, and the importance of their made partnerships and programs that are defining India’s maize compartment.

A Vision for Maize Growth

Minister Chouhan noted that the government continues to keep the approach “farmers first.” He provided an in-depth pathway for improving maize production using use better research, educating farmers, and modern farming methods.

In 1990, maize production in India was 10 million tonnes., and most recently there has been the production of over 42 million tonnes. The target is to get to 86 million tonnes by 2047, but this still needs to be accomplished. Currently, India’s average maize yield of 3.7 tonnes per hectare is still lower than the global average.

Lab to Land: Policy

As part of the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan, 11,000 scientists and agriculture officers were deployed across 7,000-8,000 villages to work with farmers directly. The objective was to transfer scientific solutions from labs to farms, with a final goal of farmers adopting better practices.

Big Push for Maize in UP

Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi highlighted the success of the UP Accelerated Maize Development Program, a five-year state initiative, where maize was introduced as a crop for diversification, and this year maize was demonstrated on an area of 5.4 lakh hectares in 24 districts. This is confirmed with the satellite surveys.

The state average yield is now at 34 quintals per hectare and may go beyond 40 quintals for the current season. There are about 15 companies in maize processing, and the government is working on the value-added maize uses like fibre and alternative plastic.

Perspective and Trends in the Market

Dr. H.S. Jat, Director of ICAR-IIMR said to meet the E30 ethanol blending target by 2030 maize production must grow 8–9% per year to reach a target of 65–70 million tonnes by 2030. Improved maize varieties are being developed to provide higher starch and higher fermentable contents to improve ethanol conversion.

Subroto Geed, Co Chair of FICCI’s Agriculture Committee stated maize is more than a crop it’s part of India’s food security, as well as biofuel and livestock feed. He stated that what is required is better technology, a better seed systems and digital farming tools to convert India into a climate smart maize economy.

In the last 10 years the area has extended by 31% and production has increased by 75%, but the demand is faster than the supply. Poultry feed is top user-components at 51%, and ethanol is using 18% maize.
