Microsoft, the technology company, has closed its Pakistan office after 25 years. Microsoft closed their Pakistan office on July 3, 2025, as part of their worldwide plan reducing workforce worldwide, and focusing more on cloud-based services. This new development is troubling for expert observers who feel this shows the incredibly worrying dynamics of the business environment in Pakistan.

Global Strategy and cuts

Microsoft have said that they are closing their limited operations in Pakistan because at the very least, this is part of a global plan that will change the way Microsoft operates. Microsoft is moving to a cloud-based model and will now depend upon local partners and regional offices to maintain and develop its business regionally – particularly in Ireland. Microsoft also recently laid off about 9,100 people – about 4% of its global employees.

Microsoft Business in Pakistan

Microsoft was never running a full business in Pakistan – they were only operating desires liaison offices that intended to work with government, education, and enterprise clients, etc. In fact, almost all of what Microsoft had worked on in Pakistan had already been moved to local or awarded to local partners – all of Microsoft’s software licenses and deals were then also held out of country altogether.

On July 5, 2025, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi confirmed that Puri, a renowned pilgrimage and tourist site in Odisha, will also become a municipal corporation. This decision comes in advance of the Bahuda Yatra, and it will allow Puri to better handle the basic facilities a town like Puri requires due to its large visitor numbers annually.

Puri will be the Sixth Municipal Corporation

Puri is the sixth municipal corporation in Odisha, joining Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, Berhampur, and Rourkela. The Chief Minister indicated that this will enable improved roads, cleanliness, water supply, drainage, and other civic amenities. The areas surrounding Puri city will fall under the new corporation, including 7–8 nearby gram panchayats from Puri Sadar and Brahmagiri Blocks.

Rationale for Upgrading

According to CM Mohan Charan Majhi, the decision was based on the increasing population within the metropolitan area, and the large number of devotees and tourists to Puri throughout the year. He noted that planning in the current municipality is not able to cover the needs of the city with respect to population growth, especially during large festivals like the Rath Yatra and Bahuda Yatra when lakhs of people visit the town. The upgradation process will begin on Saturday July 6, 2025.

Puri gets new development projects

As part of the development of Puri, Odisha CM announced plans for a Shree Jagannath Museum, Library, and Research Centre along with the redevelopment plans. The museum will include artworks and sculptures depicting the history, rituals, and culture of Lord Jagannath. The library will hold all published works on Jagannath and Odia traditions. The research centre will support study on Jagannath and Odia traditions, culture, and history. A 300-seat auditorium will be constructed to show light and sound shows depicting stories of Lord Jagannath.

The government’s plan for the future of Puri in 2036

The Odisha government is planning to transform Puri into a premier spiritual and tourism city by 2036. The CM explained that clean, green, and modern Puri will work to create a better Odisha. This announcement was made as part of the Rath Yatra announcement, as part of the government’s improvement plans for the infrastructure and amenities of Puri for residents and tourists.

The forests of Assam have produced yet another species of tree belonging to the Garcinia family. Judged by them to be a new species of Garcinia, and called Garcinia kusumae, it was first recognized while surveying the Baksa district. Because Kusum Devi, the mother of botanist Jatindra Sarma, has been a great inspiration and support in the educational journey of Sarma, he opted to name the species after her in recognition. This would be the fourth species of plant named after a family member, the record for an Indian botanist.

Discovery and Naming

The species was discovered in Bamunbari, Baksa district, Assam. The specimen was collected following herbarium protocols for collecting plants by pressing and drying it, however the species was special enough for Sarma to warrant a more detailed study. *Garcinia kusumae* is dioecious and evergreen, and can grow up to 18 metres, it flowers from February to April, and fruits ripen in between May and June. The species has been called *Garcinia kusumae* to honour Kusum Devi and pay respect to her personal and scientific knowledge in dealing with plant taxonomy.

Botanical Features

The tree has distinctive morphological features. There may be up to 15 staminate flowers per fascicle, and it contains fewer stamens per flower than the related species, except it does share a feature with Garcinia assamica. The berries have blackish resinous exudations. It bears some resemblance to Garcinia assamica, Garcinia cowa, and Garcinia succifolia, yet the features of Garcinai kusumae distinguish it as a unique species. The species is endemic to the tropical rainforests of ecoregions of northeastern India.

Cultural and Medicinal Value

The fruit of *Garcinia kusumae* has regional relevance. Its sun-dried pulp is used to make a sherbet with salt and sugar. When prepared as a drink, it works as a preventative for heat stroke and quenches thirst on hot days. It is also cooked in  curries as an ingredient for fish. Traditionally, it is used for preparing a remedy for diabetes, and dysentery. The arils of the seed can be eaten raw, accompanied by salt, chillies, and mustard oil,  thereby having  a sour and sweet taste.

Genus Garcinia

*Garcinia* is the largest genus in the family Clusiaceae, and consists of 414 species of shrubs and trees. The genus has a pan-tropical range, and centres of diversity appear to be in Africa, Australasia, and Southeast Asia. The diversity of these species appears to be mainly in the lowland tropical rainforest environment and is known for floral diversity. Many of these species appear to have pharmacological significance. India has 33 species and seven varieties, and Assam has 12 species and three varieties, which is significant.

Final Verdict

This new species contributes to Assam’s account of flora, and is indicative of the value of the location’s biodiversity and the need to continue surveying the botanical diversity of the state. Naming the species after a family member is representative of the personal and professional dedication that came into the work of scientific discovery. Furthermore, the discovery of this new species can lead to additional research into the ecosystem functions of the genus’ medicinal properties.
