Directive Principle of State Policy

Directive Principle of State Policy

The Constitution provides certain Directive Principles of State Policy, that though not enforceable by Courts, are ‘fundamental in the governance of the country’, and it is the obligation of the State to apply these principles in making the laws of the land. These contain that the State shall strive to promote the welfare of people by securing and protecting as effectively as it may, a social order, in which justice-social, economic and political-shall inform all institutions of national life. The State shall direct its policy in such a manner so as to secure the right of all men and women to adequate means of livelihood, equal pay for equal work, and to make effective provision for securing within limits of its economic capacity and development the right to work, education, and to public assistance when needed, reasonably for unemployment, old age, sickness, disablement or other cases of unmerited want, while directing its policies to secure to workers a living wage, humane conditions of work, decent standard of life, and proper fellowship of all workers in control of management of industry.
In terms of the country’s economy, the State is to direct its policy in a manner so as to secure distribution of ownership and control of material resources of community to subserve the common good; or at the very least to ensure that operation of economic system does not result in concentration of wealth or means of production to common detriment.
