Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia’s movies

Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia (1932-2003) was an all-in-one personality from Assam, and a great author and filmmaker. He has directed eight feature films, seven in Assamese and one in Hindi. All his Assamese films were recognized with the Rajat Kamal Award for Best Feature Film (Assamese) at the National Film Awards, which is a notable achievement as an artist. His films were a realistic kind of depiction of life in Assamese society, concerning human feelings and social issues. Often he adapted his own short stories and novels into films.

Kaal Sandhya (কালসন্ধ্যা) – 1997: This movie dealt with the insurgency in the Northeast India and was screened at the International Film Festival of India and the Cairo International Film Festival.
Dr. Saikia’s films are famed for their merit, often shown at national and international film festivals. He was able to enact his literary vision in to the film medium and cemented his place and became the pre-eminent figure in Assamese cinema. His films live on in memory for their complex narratives and realistic portrayals of Assamese life.
