India’s First & Largest Bio-Refinery Completed in Assam’s Golaghat: PM Modi to Inaugurate Soon

India’s first and largest bio-refinery, situated in Numaligarh, Golaghat (Assam) has been completed and will await the official inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September. Funded by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas at ₹4,000 crore, the Assam Bio-Refinery Project is a giant step for Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), which was established based on the Assam Accord.

Raw material: 5 lakh tonnes of bamboo on an annual basis
Products:
- Ethanol – 49,000 MT per annum
- Furfural – 19,000 MT per annum
- Acetic Acid – 11,000 MT per Annum
- Liquid CO₂ – 32,000 MT per annum
- Power – 25 MW per annum
Impact:
- Establishing a potential turnover value of ₹200 crores in the rural economy on annual basis
- 30,000 farmers are expected to benefit and create 3,500 jobs
- To relieve demand in crude oil imports and to advocate green energy
- The project has the potential to put Assam as the hub for green energy and as a pioneer for India’s renewable energy movement.
