India’s First Sleeper Vande Bharat Train Launched

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially launched India’s very first sleeper Vande Bharat train, creating a direct link between Kolkata (Howrah) and Guwahati (Kamakhya). The train was inaugurated on January 17, 2026, in Malda, West Bengal. This overnight semi-high-speed service ushers in a new era of modern rail travel, enhancing long-distance connectivity between eastern and northeastern India. The inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train is now in service, allowing passengers to travel from Howrah to Guwahati overnight in roughly 14 hours.
