IUCN 2025 World Heritage Conservation Outlook
The 2025 IUCN World Heritage Outlook provides a thorough global assessment of natural World Heritage sites. It evaluates the conservation status of all these sites at once, giving us a clear view of their current conditions and future outlook. This distinctive approach not only highlights effective conservation practices but also helps identify potential threats early on. By doing so, it reinforces the importance of natural World Heritage sites in safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystems in the face of global challenges.
The IUCN World Heritage Outlook is a global assessment system that evaluates the state of conservation of all UNESCO natural and mixed World Heritage Sites every 3–5 years. It covers 271 sites around the globe, including 231 natural and 40 mixed sites, which together protect over 470 million hectares of land and sea. The Outlook fosters transparency and encourages the sharing of successful management strategies, acting as an early warning system for emerging threats.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) spearheads the Outlook through its World Heritage Team and the World Commission on Protected Areas. The process involves gathering the best available data and consulting with stakeholders. This information is then integrated into a single platform for consistent analysis. The Outlook complements UNESCO’s monitoring efforts by offering an independent and global snapshot. Assessments have been carried out in 2014, 2017, 2020, and 2025, ensuring a continuous flow of information.
Natural World Heritage sites make up 22% of all World Heritage properties and account for about 8% of the protected terrestrial and marine areas around the globe. These sites play a crucial role in achieving global biodiversity goals, including the targets set by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework for 2030. The Outlook serves as a valuable resource for governments, NGOs, scientists, and Indigenous Peoples, helping them enhance site management. It also highlights the socio-economic benefits these sites provide, such as supporting local livelihoods and offering essential ecosystem services.
The Outlook sheds light on urgent conservation challenges facing natural sites. Currently, fifteen sites are listed as World Heritage in Danger. The threats they face include habitat loss, climate change, pollution, and unsustainable tourism practices. The report emphasizes the need for immediate action to address these risks. It encourages the sharing of best practices among sites to build resilience. The Outlook advocates for proactive conservation efforts to protect these natural wonders for generations to come.
