Joymoti 1935

Released in 1935, Joymoti is recognized as the first Assamese film, a true gem in Indian cinema. The film is based on a play by Lakshminath Bezbaroa that revolves around the life of the 17th-century Ahom princess, Joymoti Konwari. It was produced and directed by the remarkable Jyoti Prasad Agarwala, a celebrated poet, author, and filmmaker. The cast included Aideu Handique and the distinguished stage actor and playwright Phani Sarma. Filming spanned from 1933 to 1935, and it premiered on March 10, 1935, under the banner of Chitralekha Movietone, marking a pivotal moment for Assamese cinema.
Joymoti was screened at the 50th International Conference of the Society For Cinema and Media Studies (SCMC) of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, United States in March 2011.
