Microsoft Shuts Down Pakistan Office After 25 Years

Microsoft, the technology company, has closed its Pakistan office after 25 years. Microsoft closed their Pakistan office on July 3, 2025, as part of their worldwide plan reducing workforce worldwide, and focusing more on cloud-based services. This new development is troubling for expert observers who feel this shows the incredibly worrying dynamics of the business environment in Pakistan.

Global Strategy and cuts

Microsoft have said that they are closing their limited operations in Pakistan because at the very least, this is part of a global plan that will change the way Microsoft operates. Microsoft is moving to a cloud-based model and will now depend upon local partners and regional offices to maintain and develop its business regionally – particularly in Ireland. Microsoft also recently laid off about 9,100 people – about 4% of its global employees.

Microsoft Business in Pakistan

Microsoft was never running a full business in Pakistan – they were only operating desires liaison offices that intended to work with government, education, and enterprise clients, etc. In fact, almost all of what Microsoft had worked on in Pakistan had already been moved to local or awarded to local partners – all of Microsoft’s software licenses and deals were then also held out of country altogether.
