Mudaliar Commission

The Mudaliar Commission was an educational, commissions set up for the purpose of survey the system of secondary education in India for review and to offer suggestions for improvement. The commission reported the conditions of the secondary education system in India and recommended ways of improving it.
The Mudaliar Commission submitted its report in August of 1963, and one significant recommendation of the commission was that the period of time covered should be 3 years for middle, or junior secondary or senior basic stage, and 4 years for higher secondary stage.
Key Features of the Mudaliar Commission:
· Formation: during the years of 1952-53 the Government of India established the Mudaliar Commission with the belief that the system of secondary education was lacking attention and was in need of examination/ review.
· Position: The chairperson for the Mudaliar Commission was Dr. A. Lakshmanswami Mudaliar, Vice Chancellor of Madras University (now Chennai).
· Aims: The intention was to review the status of secondary education in India and to suggest methods for reconstruction/ reorganizing.
Recommendations:
o Flexible Curriculum: The Mudaliar Commission recommended a flexible curriculum designed to meet pupil’s varying aptitudes and interests by including courses in the humanities, sciences, technical subjects, commerce, agriculture, fine arts, and home science.
o Vocational Training: The Mudaliar Commission reiterated the importance of the provision of vocational training is important to best prepare school pupils for future jobs in the professions of their choice.
o Overall Improved Teacher Preparation: The Mudaliar Commission recommended it is of utmost importance to have improved teacher education programs, the importance of a new approach to multi-purpose schools was emphasized.
o Examination/ assessment reform: The Mudaliar Commission recommended examination changes so that examinations/ assessment were completed more in terms of appropriate assessment and not measuring memorization of the content.
Report: The report of the commission was submitted in 1953 and described its findings and recommendations.
