Plastic Waste Management

Plastic waste management refers to the collection, processing, and disposal of plastic waste, and is concerned with a range of methodologies to manage the impacts of plastic waste on the environment. Plastic waste management is made up of many different aspects including; reducing plastic use and consumption, reusing plastic waste, recycling plastic, using methods of disposal such as biodegradation and other technologies. The Swachh Bharat Mission and the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2022 initiated in India aims to motivate and inspire take responsibility of waste management of plastic through many initiatives.
The key aspects of plastic waste management are:
1. Reduce:
Cut back on plastic use by opting for reusable alternatives, bulk purchases, as well as avoiding single use plastic; straw, plastic bags, single use items, etc.
2. Reuse:
Reusable or repurpose plastics as much as you can; such as food containers for storage, or a plastic bottle can be used for a range of purposes
3. Recycle:
Recycle the waste of plastics as a raw material for another end product that means it lessens the consumption and use of virgin plastics, whilst minimising waste materials
4. Biodegradation:
A process where microorganisms decompose plastic waste into smaller, harmless substances, therefore biodegrade into water, carbon dioxide and biomass.
5. Other methods of disposal:
Consider technology like pyrolysis for example where plastics can be converted into fuel or other valuable goods. Bioremediation, where microorganisms can also break down or degrade plastics, biodegradable plastics fall within this method.
6. Infrastructure:
This is underdeveloped in many parts of India, but to make significant progress and investment into a proper system for collection, segregation and processing is needed. Invest in material recovery centre, Swachhta Kendras.
7. Policies & Regulation:
Policies and regulation should be implemented and should be followed as per the protocols to promote responsible management and waste management practices. Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016; the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2022 should be enforced.
