PM Modi Inaugurates Redeveloped 524-Year-Old Tripura Sundari Temple in Tripura

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the redeveloped 524-year-old Tripura Sundari Temple in Udaipur, Gomati district, Tripura. The temple, one of India’s 51 Shaktipeethas, holds immense religious and cultural importance. The redevelopment project was undertaken with support from the PRASAD scheme (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) of the Ministry of Tourism, along with a ₹7 crore contribution from the Tripura government.

History of Tripura Sundari Temple

The temple, built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, is situated on a hillock resembling a tortoise’s hump, giving it the name Kurma Pīṭha. It houses two idols of the Goddess: the 5-foot-tall Tripura Sundari and a smaller 2-foot idol of Goddess Chandi, affectionately known as Chhoto-Ma.

Highlighted features of the redevelopment project comprise:

New Facilities: The construction of a new three-story facility that includes lobbies, 86 stalls, multi-purpose halls, a “prasad ghar”, dormitories, and most importantly, living facilities for the monks and volunteers.

Accessibility Concerns: Ramps and lifts have been fitted for the purposes of all “differently-abled” devotees and participants.

Cultural Aspects: An exhibition area has been established for the purposes of displaying the history of the temple, genealogy of the ruling Manikya dynasty and the cultural history of Tripura.

Shakti Peethas Park: A unique park that contains replicas of all 51 Shakti Peethas around India has been built as a part of the complex.

Facilities Upgrades: New pathways, renovated entranceways, improved drainage, fencing, a food court, shops for souvenirs, drinking water, parking, landscaping, and accommodations are all new enhancements as a part of the redevelopment project.
