Project Vijayak, part of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), celebrated its 15th Raising Day in September 2025 in Kargil, Ladakh. This initiative has significantly improved infrastructure in one of the most challenging terrains on the planet. With investments surpassing Rs 1,200 crore, it has revolutionized connectivity and operational readiness in Ladakh. Origins and Objectives
Launched in 2010, Project Vijayak was designed to enhance road and bridge infrastructure in Ladakh. Its primary aim is to connect remote valleys and forward areas to the national mainstream. The project plays a crucial role in meeting the operational requirements of the Armed Forces in this strategically important region, while also striving to uplift the socio-economic conditions of local communities.
Infrastructure Achievements
In its 15 years of operation, Project Vijayak has successfully built and maintained over 1,400 km of roads and 80 major bridges. A standout moment was the reopening of the Zojila Pass just 31 days after its winter closure in April 2025, setting a record for high-altitude connectivity and showcasing impressive rapid response capabilities. This infrastructure not only facilitates civilian travel but also supports military logistics.
Community Engagement and Welfare
This project really prioritizes the well-being of Casual Paid Labourers, who are essential to our operations. We’re rolling out initiatives like insulated shelters, improved sanitation, protective gear, winter clothing, and health camps. Plus, we’re hosting cultural events and community programs that bring together troops, families, and locals. Celebrations such as Sainik Sammelan and bike rallies pay tribute to the spirit and sacrifices of everyone involved.
Technological and Environmental Innovations
Future plans involve widening key roads and building new tunnels and bridges. The project adopts modern technologies such as geotextiles for soil reinforcement, advanced surfacing techniques, slope stabilisation, and digital monitoring systems. Eco-friendly construction practices are emphasised to preserve Ladakh’s fragile environment. These measures aim to enhance resilience and sustainability.
