Every year on the day of Punyatithi (death anniversary) of  Swami Vivekananda, an eminent Indian saint philosopher and spiritual teacher also regarded the Father of Modern Indian Nationalism, we celebrate the impact that he had in taking Hinduism and Indian values to the entire globe and the ways in which he continues to inspire youth and society today.

About Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda was born Narendranath Datta on 12th January 1863 in Calcutta (which is now known as Kolkata.) After he became a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramhansa, his life completely shifted and he received spiritual direction that helped him become the revered spiritual leader that he is today. On the recommendation by Maharaja Ajit Singh of Khetri, in 1893 he officially took the name Vivekananda. He passed away on 4th July 1902 in Belur Math, which is the headquarters of Ramakrishna Mission, in West Bengal.

His message to the world

The message that Swami Vivekananda spread was about unity, peace, service and human values. He believed in the idea that “every living being is divine,” and that serving mankind is serving God. He spread the teachings of the Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and took inspiration from Buddha and Jesus Christ.

Contribution to education and society

Swami Vivekananda believed strongly in education as a means to build a nation, and he believed that every child should have an education that builds character in children, with a view of making confident, kind, and self-reliant citizens. He tented that spirituality and service must of both.

Four Paths to Liberation

He gave four ways to reach moksha (freedom from worldly pain):

  • Raja Yoga – path of meditation
  • Karma Yoga – path of selfless action
  • Jnana Yoga  – path of knowledge
  • Bhakti Yoga – path of devotion
