Union Minister C.R. Patil Inaugurate C-FLOOD, India’s First Unified Flood Forecasting Platform
In a big move towards modernizing India’s disaster response mechanism, Union Minister of Jal Shakti, Shri C. R. Patil, launched C-FLOOD, a Unified Inundation Forecasting System, on July 2, 2025. C-FLOOD was developed together by C-DAC, CWC, and NRSC, and is be a web-based platform, which provides a two-day advance flood forecasts up to the village level, which will support flood preparedness in flood prone areas & mitigate inundation impacts. The C-FLOOD initiative is part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) and highlights our country’s complementarity of science and technologies to combat climate change.
The launch of the C-FLOOD platform was formally done by Union Minister Shri C.R. Patil in New Delhi on July 2, 2025. The launch is a significant technological leap in extending India’s flood forecasting capabilities and subsequently providing early warnings and live inundation mapping. This tool will help National and State Disaster Management Authorities (NDMA – SDMA) to plan evacuations timely and reduce flood losses.
Goals and Features of C-FLOOD
• Provide 2-days advance flood forecasts up to the village level
• Provide forecasts in the form of flood inundation maps and water level predictions
• C-FLOOD is designed to act as a unified platform that integrates multi-agency flood modelling from national and regional agencies.
• C-FLOOD is meant to serve as a decision support system for disaster management authorities
Current Coverage
• Mahanadi, Godavari and Tapi river basins
• Additional river systems will be rolled out in future phases
