The United Nations declared 2023 as the “International Year of Millets”. This was a proposal by India and with the suppport of more than 70 countries. The declaration aimed to raise awareness and promote the nutritional benefits and adaptability of millets.

• Millet will now be recognized as an important component of our food basket and effective policy change.
• With the adoption of the India-sponsored resolution, the United Nations and United Nations member states, with the support of other global organizations, will observe the International Year of Millets beginning in the year 2023 with multiple activities geared towards raising awareness and directing policy attention to the health and other nutritional benefits of millet.
• These activities should also acknowledge the fact that in adverse climatic conditions, millets can be cultivated.
