Vision India @2047: Transforming India into a Developed Country

Vision India @2047

In early 2024, the Prime Minister is anticipated to reveal a road map to transform the nation into a developed country with a USD 30 trillion economy by the time it marks 100 years of Independence.

The Vision India@2047 blueprint, as it is formally called, has been under development for almost two years with officials across ministries deliberating on how to elevate the country from its present state of development to where it aims to be.

The NITI Aayog, while finalizing this vision document, will shortly present its core ideas and objectives to leading experts across sectors, including World Bank President Ajay Banga, Apple CEO Tim Cook, along with Indian business leaders and thought leaders, to refine them and address any oversights. Coming before the Lok Sabha election, the plan could be interpreted as the government’s policy roadmap pledge for potential voters.

What is Vision India@2047?

  • The Project:
    • Vision India@2047 is an initiative launched by the NITI Aayog, India’s premier policy think tank, to develop a roadmap for India’s advancement over the next 25 years.
    • The initiative seeks to transform India into a global frontrunner in innovation and technology, an exemplar of human progress and social welfare, and a leader in environmental protection.
  • Objectives:
    • Building a USD 30 trillion economy with a per-capita income of USD 18,000-20,000 alongside robust public finances and a strong financial system.
    • Establishing state-of-the-art infrastructure and amenities across rural and urban regions.
    • Reducing government intervention in citizens’ daily lives and advancing digital economy and governance.
    • Creating 3-4 global leaders in each sector through consolidation or reorganization and strengthening domestic industry and innovation.
    • Achieving self-sufficiency in defence and space domains and strengthening India’s global position.
    • Promoting green development and climate action through expanded renewable energy capacity and decreased carbon emissions.
    • Equipping youth with education and skills while generating more job opportunities.
    • Collaborating with international R&D organizations to establish top 10 laboratories nationally and placing at least 10 Indian institutions among global top 100.

Future Prospects:

  • Multiple projections indicate that India’s GDP will surpass Japan and Germany by 2030.
  • According to S&P ratings agency, India’s nominal GDP is projected to grow from USD 3.4 trillion in 2022 to USD 7.3 trillion by 2030.
  • This significant economic growth would lead to India becoming the second largest economy in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • The initial forecasts from NITI Aayog have projected:
    • India’s exports will reach USD 8.67 trillion in 2047 while its imports will amount to USD 12.12 trillion.
    • India’s average life expectancy will increase to 71.8 from 67.2 in 2021 and its literacy rate will rise to 89.8% from 77.8% in 2021.
