Wildlife Genetics Laboratory

Meghalaya Fovt. has approved Wildlife Genetics Laboratory (WGL) of Aaranyak

The Government of Meghalaya has notified the Wildlife Genetics Laboratory (WGL) of Aaranyak and its Director under Section 329(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, marking a significant step in strengthening wildlife crime investigation.

This recognition enables the laboratory to assist law enforcement agencies through wildlife forensic DNA analysis and evidence collection, improving the effectiveness of investigations and conviction rates. It is the first such recognition in Meghalaya, following a similar move earlier by Assam.

Established in 2008, WGL is the only wildlife DNA forensics facility in Northeast India and has supported numerous investigations, highlighting the growing role of scientific tools in conservation enforcement.
