The day aims to remind Indian citizens about the impact of radio on our lives. Akashvani or All India Radio (AIR) is India\u2019s homegrown national radio broadcasting service which reaches millions of homes across the nation. AIR is a division of Prasar Bharati which was previously under government control but is an autonomous body now, set up by an Act of parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is celebrated because it was on this day in the year 1927, that the first-ever radio broadcast in the country went on the air from the Bombay Station under a private company, the Indian Broadcasting Company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nIndian radio had an enormous impact on the creation of an independent India. Both the Azad Hind Radio of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the Congress Radio helped rouse Indians against the British before independence. Akashvani was also instrumental in helping Bangladesh gain independence from an oppressive Pakistan in the 1971 war. The 2021 jury included singer P Jayachandran,<\/strong> director Sibi Malayil,<\/strong> film academy chairman Ranjith,<\/strong> and Rani George,<\/strong> the principal secretary of the Department of Cultural Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe filmmaker made his directorial debut with Athithi in 1975 and earned fame for his films like Rugmini, which won the National Award for Best feature film in Malayalam and the Kerala State Film Award in 1989. He is also known for films like Thenthulli, Laxmivijayam and Thottam. The filmmaker\u2019s last directorial venture was 2020\u2019s Gramavrikshathile Kuyil. It is presented annually by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, a nonprofit institution under the Department of Cultural Affairs. Instituted in 1992, the award is given to honour the recipients for their outstanding contribution to Malayalam cinema. The award was created to commemorate the contribution of Indian filmmaker JC Daniel, who is often regarded as the father of Malayalam cinema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since its inception, the award has been bestowed on 27 individuals. Film distributor and producer TE Vasudevan was its first recipient. Singer P Jayachandran was the latest recipient \u2013 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
