Dr Radhakrishnan instead made a request of them to observe September 5 as Teachers\u2019 Day, to recognise the contribution of teachers to the society. He was born to Sarvepalli Veeraswami and Sita (Sitamma). His family hails from Sarvepalli village in the Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Awards and Honours:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radhakrishnan was awarded several high awards during his life, including a knighthood in 1931, the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, in 1954, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. He was also one of the founders of Helpage India, a non-profit organisation for the elderly underprivileged in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Education<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radhakrishnan was awarded scholarships throughout his academic life. He joined Voorhees College in Vellore for his high school education. After his F.A. (First of Arts) class, he joined the Madras Christian College (affiliated to the University of Madras) at the age of 16.
