{"id":115959,"date":"2022-09-16T13:32:55","date_gmt":"2022-09-16T08:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=115959"},"modified":"2022-09-16T13:32:57","modified_gmt":"2022-09-16T08:02:57","slug":"india-adds-10-more-wetlands-designated-as-ramsar-sites-to-make-total-64-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/india-adds-10-more-wetlands-designated-as-ramsar-sites-to-make-total-64-sites\/","title":{"rendered":"India adds 10 more wetlands designated as Ramsar sites to make total 64 sites- UPSC Daily Important Topic | 16 September 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">India adds 10 more wetlands designated as Ramsar sites to make total 64 sites-<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713India adds 10 more wetlands designated as Ramsar sites to make total 64 sites covering an area of 12,50,361 ha in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf RAMSAR Convention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713India is one of the Contracting Parties to Ramsar Convention, signed in Ramsar, Iran, in 1971.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713India signed it on 1st Feb 1982.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf New Sites added- Tamil Nadu:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Koonthankulam Bird Sanctuary<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Man-made wetland which covers an area of 72.04 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Location: Nanguneri Taluk of Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713It is the largest reserve for breeding resident and migratory water birds in South India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Gulf of Mannar Marine Biosphere Reserve<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Location: southeastern coastline and is a unique marine environment rich in biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713This is the first Marine Biosphere Reserve in South and South-East Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Vembanur Wetland Complex<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Man-made inland tank which forms the southernmost tip of peninsular India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713This wetland forms part of the Important Bird and Biodiversity Area and hence part of the BirdLife International Data Zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713About 250 species of birds have been recorded in the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Vellode Bird Sanctuary<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Location: Vadamugam Vellode village in Tamil Nadu\u2019s Erode district. Locally known as Periyakulam Yeri, it is one of the 141 prioritised wetlands in the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Oldest bird-protected areas in Chengalpattu district of Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713This freshwater wetland is a people-protected waterbird area, the history of which goes back centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Locals have been protecting this heronry and in return benefitting from the manure-rich water from the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Udayamarthandapuram Bird Sanctuary<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Location: Tiruthuraipoondi taluk of Tiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713An important staging and breeding ground for several species of waterbirds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf New Sites added- Odisha:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Satkosia Gorge<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713A narrow stretch of River Mahanadi near Tikarpada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Location: within Satkosia Tiger Reserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713The gorge is approximately 22 km in length and part of Satkosia Sanctuary covering an area of 795.59 sq km notified by the State government in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf New Sites added- Goa:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Nanda Lake<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Nanda Lake is considered to be critically significant for its ecosystem services and biodiversity values for the local communities and society at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713The majority of the area is intermittent freshwater marshes that lie adjacent to one of the major rivulets of the Zuari River.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf New Sites added- Karnataka:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Ranganathituu BS<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Location: Mandya district, of the state of Karnataka, India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Enlisted as one of the Important Bird Areas (IBA) in Karnataka and India by Bombay Natural History Society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713It is an ecologically important riverine wetland of India, rich in biodiversity, with 188 species of plants, over 225 species of birds, 69 species of fishes, 13 species of frogs, and 30 species of butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf New Sites added- Madhya Pradesh:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Sirpur wetland<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713Location: Indore, Madhya Pradesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713It is not only important for its aesthetic value but it provides immense ecological services such as being an important source of water and helping groundwater recharge in the downstream areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2713It is an important nesting place for terrestrial and aquatic migratory &amp;
