{"id":128053,"date":"2023-01-09T18:13:40","date_gmt":"2023-01-09T12:43:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=128053"},"modified":"2023-01-09T18:13:42","modified_gmt":"2023-01-09T12:43:42","slug":"stay-with-science-go-slow-on-gm-crops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/stay-with-science-go-slow-on-gm-crops\/","title":{"rendered":"Stay with science, go slow on GM crops: UPSC Daily Important Topic |  8 January 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stay with science, go slow on GM crops:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Transgenic technology, unlike other technologies, is uncontrollable and irreversible after environmental release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Therefore, any deliberate environmental release has to be only after thorough, independent, peer-reviewed assessment of long-term implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf Need to be wary of GM crops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Unpredictable &amp; irreversible outcomes: manifesting in highly complex living systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Difficult to eliminate: not a single one of 330 invasive species in India has yet been eliminated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Expanding adverse impacts of herbicide tolerant crops: cause ecological damage &amp; human health impacts for consumers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf Traits in GM crops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Herbicide tolerance: where crop plants are modified to withstand large amounts of toxic weed-killing chemicals<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Insect resistance: pesticidal toxin, usually Bt, is produced inside the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf Issue of DMH-11:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Claimed that it is not an HT crop: but due to the Bar gene being present in both parental lines, it can withstand application of a toxic weedkiller, glufosinate &amp; should therefore have been assessed as an HT crop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Absence of regulatory protocols for HT crops: Still, a crop with an HT trait is being released in the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Exposed lapses and inadequacies in bio-safety testing: by technical expert committee (TEC) appointed by SC &amp; 2 parliamentary standing committees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705Issue of independent testing:&nbsp; No independent health expert participated in the committees that looked at GM mustard safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705No independent scrutiny: Biosafety data of GM mustard has not been posted on the regulator\u2019s website for independent scrutiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705False claims of yield increase: claims of a higher yield were based on comparison with a non-hybrid variety &#8211; several higher-yielding mustard hybrids should have been the comparators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705No scientific comparison with other countries: countries with highest yields in the world do not use this GM HT technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u25cf Conclusion:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705For mustard yield improvement, safe agro-ecological solutions such as the \u201csystem of mustard intensification\u201d are showing significant yield increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705This technology should be promoted, not GM HT mustard of dubious yields and safety.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stay with science, go slow on GM crops: \u2705Transgenic technology, unlike other technologies, is uncontrollable and irreversible after environmental release. \u2705Therefore, any deliberate environmental release has to be only after thorough, independent, peer-reviewed assessment of long-term implications. \u25cf Need to be wary of GM crops: \u2705Unpredictable &amp; irreversible outcomes: manifesting in highly complex living systems.
