Sabir Ali, Iron Man of India, passes away at the age of 67: <\/strong>Sabir Ali, known as the “Ironman of India,” died after winning the decathlon gold medal at the Asian Athletics Championships in Tokyo in 1981. He was 67. Ali, who retired from Railways, won the title in the Japanese capital with a tally of 7,253 points beating Japan\u2019s Nobuya Saito (7,078) and China\u2019s Zu Qilin (7,074). At the South Asian Federation Games in Kathmandu and Dhaka, he also won two silver medals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 1979 and 1985, Ali competed in the demanding competition and won eight consecutive Open National titles. The Railways star was unbeatable at the Inter-State meets too \u2013 he represented Haryana \u2014 which he won twice in 1979 and 1981. The javelin throw was his favourite sport. Ali received the Arjuna Award in 1981 in addition to winning bronze and silver at the World Railway Meets in 1981 and 1985.
