The announcement came in the presence of representatives of Big Tech internet companies like Meta, Snap, Google and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/category\/daily-quiz\/daily-quiz-february-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">February 2023 Current Affairs Quiz<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Significance of The Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC):<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The digital platform, Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC), is a powerful tool for ensuring platform accountability to their users, according to Chandrasekhar, the minister of state for IT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is one more milestone in the evolving framework to ensure internet is open, safe and trusted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grievance Appellate Committee (GAC) and Its Functions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The GACs will function as a \u201ctraffic signpost\u201d on the Internet. Every GAC will have three members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The need for such panels arose as a result of a large number of grievances being left unresolved or unsatisfactorily addressed by Internet Intermediaries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The GACs are expected to create a culture of responsiveness among all Internet Platforms and Intermediaries towards their consumers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Users will be able to appeal to this new appellate body against the decision of the grievance officer of social media intermediaries and other online intermediaries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Committee will endeavour to address the users\u2019 appeal within a stipulated period of 30 days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The GAC is a critical piece of overall policy and legal framework to ensure that the Internet in India is open, safe, trusted and accountable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The GAC will be a virtual Digital platform that will operate only online and digitally \u2014 wherein the entire appeal process, from filing of appeal to the decision thereof, shall be conducted digitally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>IT Rules and Social Media:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>IT rules had been strengthened in October to pave the way for formation of the Centre-appointed panels to settle often-ignored user grievances against the way social media platforms addressed their complaints regarding content and other matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IT Rules already require social media intermediaries such as Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp to have a Grievance Officer to whom users can complain about any violation of the Rules.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MoS IT launches Grievance Appellate Committee to ensure safe internet: IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has established a grievance appellate panel mechanism to investigate user appeals against social media platform decisions.
