Space agency ISRO<\/strong> has announced a joint Indo-French infrared earth observation satellite mission<\/strong>, TRISHNA (Thermal Infra-Red Imaging Satellite for High-Resolution Natural Resource Assessment)<\/strong>, to monitor surface temperature and water management around the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

About This Project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The project, which comes when both India and Europe<\/strong> have been assailed by extreme heat,<\/strong> will provide data points for climate impacts<\/strong> on earth through evapotranspiration monitoring,<\/strong> which measures the evaporation of water from land as well as release from plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • The mission will study\u00a0water presence and concentrations<\/strong>, as well as dynamics including melting glaciers, in various parts of the biosphere, quantifying water being used on land and how. ISRO said for heat, the\u00a0satellite will monitor thermal anomalies and spikes, emission of heat from land, surface energy, urban heat islands, and other global parametres.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • In the process, the satellite will also study\u00a0aerosols, water vapour, and clouds<\/strong>\u00a0in the atmosphere around the world.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • It is currently tentatively set to\u00a0launch in 2025<\/strong>\u00a0with an\u00a0expected lifespan of 5 years<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Payloads and parameters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    • The satellite will\u00a0carry two primary payloads<\/strong>. The\u00a0Thermal Infra-Red (TIR) payload<\/strong>\u00a0will be provided by the\u00a0French space agency CNES,<\/strong>\u00a0and will be a\u00a0four channel long-wavelength infrared imaging sensor<\/strong>\u00a0that will study high-resolution surface temperature. It will also map the amounts of\u00a0heat radiated back from land in different regions.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    • The\u00a0Visible Near Infrared-Red Short Wave Infrared-Red (VNIR-SWIR)<\/strong>\u00a0payload is being\u00a0developed by ISRO<\/strong>, and will map over seven bands the reflectivity or\u00a0albedo of earth\u2019s surface.<\/strong>\u00a0This will measure the amount of heat reflecting off the earth\u2019s surface, and will also calculate\u00a0various biophysical and radiation budget variables.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      Expected Benefits of This Mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      • The mission is expected to boost\u00a0remote sensing technology,<\/strong>\u00a0which is monitoring\u00a0earth from a distance up in the orbit<\/strong>. The satellite and the data it will provide is made more crucial as extreme temperatures and weather events take hold of the globe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • ISRO said the mission would address\u00a0critical water and food security issues<\/strong>\u00a0by providing essential data that can in turn be used for newer sustainable policies in water, among watershed managers,\u00a0agro-industries<\/strong>, and the farming community in India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • The infrared heat imaging in the satellite is also of quite high resolution, and the satellite has a\u00a0\u201chigh-repeat\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0imaging capability (presumably to image the same area multiple times), which would help in improving understanding of earth\u2019s natural processes to aid global climate change mitigation efforts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • ISRO also said the\u00a0TRISHNA mission<\/strong>\u00a0will address\u00a0crucial water and food security challenges<\/strong>, focusing on\u00a0anthropogenic or human-induced impacts of climate change.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
