{"id":1684,"date":"2019-06-18T13:28:59","date_gmt":"2019-06-18T13:28:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=1684"},"modified":"2019-06-18T13:29:01","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T13:29:01","slug":"kappaphycus-alvarezii-seaweed-spreads-to-coral-reef-areas-in-valai-island-in-gom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/kappaphycus-alvarezii-seaweed-spreads-to-coral-reef-areas-in-valai-island-in-gom\/","title":{"rendered":"Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed spreads to coral reef areas in Valai island in GoM"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The invasive&nbsp;<strong>Kappaphycus alvarezii seaweed<\/strong>, which smothers and kills coral reefs, has spread its wings\nto coral reef areas in<strong>&nbsp;Valai island in the Gulf of Mannar (GoM)&nbsp;<\/strong>and set to invade new coral colonies in the marine national\npark.&nbsp;<strong>Macrofaunal\nand fish density decreased<\/strong>&nbsp;when\nKappaphycus cover increased.<br>\nAfter invading Shingle, Kurusadai and Mulli\nislands in Mandapam cluster of the GoM,<strong>&nbsp;the red algae invaded Valai\nisland&nbsp;<\/strong>along Kilakarai coast\nfollowing its cultivation in south Palk Bay.&nbsp;<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Findings:<\/strong><br>\nIn the report submitted to the&nbsp;<strong>Ministry of Environment, Forest and\nClimate Change (MoEFC)&nbsp;<\/strong>by\nthe&nbsp;<strong>Reef\nResearch Team (RRT) of Suganthi Devadason Marine Research Institute (SDMRI),<\/strong>&nbsp;Thoothukudi, said that the destructive algae had\ninvaded the reef areas of Valai Island, Palk Bay Gulf of Munnar. The research\nteam counted<strong>&nbsp;32\ncoral colonies of Acropora nobilis<\/strong>&nbsp;affected by Kappaphycus algae. The team said that the\nalgae was firmly attached to the coral colonies and started forming a mat over\nthem. It would eventually smother and kill corals.<br>\n<br>\n<strong>Steps taken:<\/strong><br>\nA 2005 Government Order had restricted\ncultivation of the&nbsp;<strong>exotic seaweed&nbsp;<\/strong>only to the seawaters north of the Palk Bay and South of\nThoothukudi coast.<br>\nThe Forest department is to take up the issue\nwith agencies, which promoted the cultivation of the seaweed.
