{"id":1687,"date":"2019-06-18T13:31:25","date_gmt":"2019-06-18T13:31:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/?p=1687"},"modified":"2019-06-18T13:33:27","modified_gmt":"2019-06-18T13:33:27","slug":"the-worlds-smallest-baby-weighing-245-grams-survives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/the-worlds-smallest-baby-weighing-245-grams-survives\/","title":{"rendered":"The Worlds smallest baby, weighing 245 grams survives"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A California hospital on Wednesday\ndisclosed the birth of the world\u2019s smallest baby ever to survive, weighing a\nmere 245 grams \u2014 the same as a large apple \u2014 when she was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The girl, nicknamed Saybie by hospital\nstaff, was born 23 weeks and three days into her mother\u2019s pregnancy at Sharp\nMary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns in San Diego, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The father was told by doctors that he would have about an hour with his daughter before shepassed away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut that hour turned into two hours\nwhich turned into a day, which turned into a week,\u201d the mother said in a video\nreleased by the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors said Saybie was delivered via\nemergency caesarean section in December at 23 weeks and three days gestation in\nthe womb after severe pregnancy complications that put her mother\u2019s life at\nrisk. A typical pregnancy lasts 40 weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After nearly five months at the\nhospital\u2019s neonatal intensive care unit, Saybie was discharged home earlier\nthis month weighing a healthy 2.2 kg and sporting a graduation cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe is a miracle, that\u2019s for sure,\u201d\nsaid Kim Norby, one of the nurses who cared for Saybie as she fought to survive\n\u2014 with a sign by her crib that read \u201ctiny but mighty\u201d cheering her on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Miracle\nbaby<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Wiest, another nurse featured in\nthe video, said Saybie was so small at birth that \u201cyou could barely see her on\nthe bed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors said that apart from Saybie\u2019s\nfighting spirit, her survival as a micro preemie \u2014 a baby born before 28 weeks\u2019\ngestation \u2014 could be attributed to the fact that she suffered no serious\ncomplications after birth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saybie\u2019s ranking as the world\u2019s tiniest\nbaby ever to survive is according to the Tiniest Babies Registry, maintained by\nthe University of Iowa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A California hospital on Wednesday disclosed the birth of the world\u2019s smallest baby ever to survive, weighing a mere 245 grams \u2014 the same as a large apple \u2014 when she was born.
