About:<\/td>Northeast India, officially the North Eastern Region (NER), is the easternmost region of India representing both a geographic and political administrative division of the country. In total, there are eight states in this region: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura (better known as the “Seven Sisters”) along with their “brother” Sikkim. The states belonging to the North Eastern Region have been formally granted recognition under the North Eastern Council (NEC), which was established in 1971 as an implementing agency to promote development in the North Eastern States. Thus, after many moons of forming a part of the NEC, Sikkim, in 2002, became the eighth state in ushering in the North Eastern Region. The Look-East connectivity projects enable Northeast India to connect to East Asia and ASEAN. The city of Guwahati in Assam is referred to as the “Gateway to the Northeast” and is the largest metropolis in Northeast India.<\/td><\/tr>
Geography:<\/td>The region shares an international border stretching for 5,182 kilometres (3,220 miles) with several neighbouring countries which account for about 99% of its total geographical boundary\u20141,395 kilometres (867 miles) bordering China in the north, 1,640 kilometres (1,020 miles) bordering Myanmar in the east, 1,596 kilometres (992 miles) bordering Bangladesh in the south-west, 97 kilometres (60 miles) with Nepal in the west, and 455 kilometres (283 miles) with Bhutan in the north-west. It covers an area of 262,184 square kilometres (101,230 sq mi), which accounts for about 8% of total India. The region opens up to the mainland India through the Siliguri Corridor. It is covered by the mighty river systems of the Brahmaputra-Barak and their tributaries. Geographically, apart from the Brahmaputra, Barak and Imphal valleys and a small stretch of flatlands in between the hills of Meghalaya and Tripura, two-thirds of the area is hilly country interlaced by valley and plain; altitude varying from almost sea-level to over 7,000 metres (23,000 ft) above mean sea level. The region’s high rainfall, averaging around 10,000 millimetres (390 in) and above creates problems of the ecosystem, high seismic activity, and floods.
