They have identified a new species of phytopathogenic fungus, Epicoccum indicum, which is responsible for leaf spot disease in Chrysopogon zizanioides (vetiver). This finding is crucial for agricultural research, as vetiver is widely used for medicinal and environmental purposes.

A research team led by Senior Assistant Professor Raghvendra Singh and research scholar Soumyadeep Rajwar classified this new species through morpho-cultural characteristics and multigene molecular phylogenetic analysis. Their study was published in the esteemed journal Fungal Diversity on December 19, 2024, marking another achievement for BHU in the realm of fungal biodiversity research.

How Does This Relate to Past Discoveries?

BHU has been at the forefront of mycological research in recent years. In November 2022, its scientists, working alongside the Agharkar Research Institute and the Kerala Forest Research Institute, identified a new fungal genus called Neokamalomyces indicus, found on banyan tree leaves. Researchers are currently exploring this fungus for its potential applications in antibiotics and cancer therapies.

In January 2024, BHU researchers also identified a new rust fungus family, Nyssopsoraceae, found on Toona sinensis leaves in Uttarakhand. After more than eight months of intense coalition discussions, a new government was formed, consisting of five political parties: N-VA, Christian Democrats (CD&V), socialists (Vooruit), liberals (MR), and centrists (Les Engagés). This coalition, referred to as “Arizona,” now holds a majority in Belgium’s 150-seat federal parliament. De Wever’s appointment indicates a new direction in Belgian politics, with an emphasis on various key policies that could significantly impact the country.

A Look at the New Government’s Composition and Its Challenges

De Wever’s cabinet is made up of 15 members, but only three of them are women, leading to worries about gender representation. Additionally, although the coalition holds a majority in parliament, it has been criticized for the compromises made to establish the government. For instance, balancing social benefits and addressing the national debt, which exceeds 100% of GDP, remains a significant challenge for the new administration. These issues will be crucial as the government moves forward in implementing its policies.

How Will De Wever’s Leadership Shape Belgium’s Future?

The appointment of Bart De Wever as Belgium’s new Prime Minister signifies more than just a political transition; it highlights a growing trend of right-wing nationalist parties gaining traction across Europe. His leadership will influence not only domestic policies in Belgium but also the nation’s role within the European Union. As Belgium grapples with issues like immigration, energy, and defense, De Wever’s government will play a pivotal role in shaping Belgium’s future trajectory both within Europe and globally.

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation 2025

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation was observed on February 6, 2025. This indicates that 98.12% of these high-value notes have been returned to the banking system.

Why Was the ₹2000 Banknote Introduced?

The ₹2000 note was introduced on November 10, 2016, as per Section 24(1) of the RBI Act, 1934, following the demonetization of ₹500 and ₹1000 notes. The primary purpose was to quickly replace the void left by demonetization and ensure adequate currency in circulation. However, by May 2023, the RBI observed that 89% of these notes had reached their expected lifespan of 4-5 years, leading to a significant drop in the use of ₹2000 notes. In line with its “Clean Note Policy,” the RBI opted to withdraw these high-denomination notes while ensuring a smooth transition.

Can ₹2000 Notes Still Be Used or Exchanged?

Yes, even though ₹2000 banknotes are no longer actively circulated, they are still considered legal tender. The RBI has made it clear that people can continue to exchange or deposit these notes at designated RBI offices. The central bank’s approach is designed to facilitate a smooth and gradual withdrawal process, ensuring that daily transactions are not disrupted.

The RBI’s structured approach reflects its commitment to maintaining a clean and efficient currency system. As fewer ₹2000 notes remain in circulation, the move aligns with evolving cash usage trends, reinforcing trust in India’s financial system.

Sharan Hegde’s 1% Club Secures SEBI RIA License

Sharan Hegde’s platform, The 1% Club, has made a remarkable achievement by becoming one of the first finfluencer-led companies to obtain the SEBI Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) license.
