His latest work, “Moon,” is a psychological drama that beautifully captures the essence of his home state’s landscapes and its people. This project has been chosen for the Asian Project Market (APM) at the 30th Busan International Film Festival, marking a major milestone for regional Indian cinema.

This film produced by Shankar Lall Goenka and several partner productions, underscores Kurbah’s persistent contemplation of stories from Meghalaya.

Moon is a psychological drama that considers memory, guilt and the subtle ruptures in a family. Set between the humid hills of Meghalaya and the restless streets of Delhi, the story follows two people returning home after violence.

A man has returned to his village from Delhi after a violent act, while a woman must deal with the aftermath of abuse and before returning home to a family that raised her as a boy. Their reunion is in rain-soaked fields that are fractured around trauma.

APM, Asia’s first investment and co-production market, introduces promising film projects at planning, development, or production stages to potential collaborators, according to the festival’s website. Producer Goenka noted that support for Moon has already come from Hello Meghalaya, a government-backed streaming platform, and the strategy is to gain visibility through international festivals first.

Kurbah’s previous works include “Market” (2019), which painted a vivid picture of Shillong’s street life, and “The Elysian Field” (Ha Lyngkha Bneng), which earned accolades for best film and director at the 47th Moscow International Film Festival, showcasing his rising global acclaim.

The 30th Busan International Film Festival continues in Busan and will conclude on September 26.

Shillong‑based filmmaker Pradip Kurbah is emerging once again from the fog‑clad hills of Meghalaya into the international cinematic limelight.
