This marks a major milestone in India&#8217;s journey towards a more digital financial landscape. With this initiative, fintech companies now have the opportunity to test and launch innovative products for the e-Rupee retail pilot, which first kicked off on December 1, 2022. This step not only bolsters India\u2019s ambition to lead in digital currency adoption globally but also creates a regulated environment for experimenting with new digital payment solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About the RBI Retail CBDC Sandbox<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The sandbox is designed to allow fintech firms (or fintechs) to access APIs, build prototypes, test products, and experiment with innovations in a controlled environment using the digital rupee infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The RBI retail sandbox allows selected fintechs to build tools that,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Integrate with the e-Rupee infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simulate real-world retail transactions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Innovate around payment, settlement, and tokenisation processes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This sandbox is an extension of the ongoing CBDC pilot, which now has around 7 million users across India, and is running in collaboration with several major banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the e-Rupee (CBDC)?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital Rupee (e\u20b9) or the central bank digital currency (CBDC) is issued by the RBI. It offers features similar to physical cash like convenience of use, guarantee of the RBI, finality of settlement, among others.
