This move aims to prohibit the practice of polygamy \u2014 entering into more than one marriage while a first marriage subsists \u2014 making it a punishable offence. The legislation reflects the state\u2019s push toward legal uniformity in marriage practices and reinforcing women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key Provisions of the Bill<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Bill seeks to make it illegal for an individual to marry another person if their first marriage still stands (i.e., they are not legally separated or divorced).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offenders could face imprisonment for up to 7\u202fyears for violating the law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A provision in the Bill allows for the establishment of a special compensation fund for women adversely affected by polygamous marriages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Bill will be tabled in the Assembly (scheduled for 25\u202fNovember\u202f2025) for legislative approval.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exemptions &amp; Special Conditions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The law will not apply to members of Scheduled Tribes (STs) or to residents of areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution in Assam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marriages within minority communities, specifically Muslim marriages in Scheduled Areas that occurred before\u202f2005, are also stated to remain outside the scope of the Bill.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government of Assam has taken a landmark step by approving the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill 2025.
