A DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) train is typically used for short-distance passenger travel. In this innovative model, the DEMU train has been enhanced to operate on a dual-fuel system, utilizing both Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The train boasts 1,400 horsepower (HP) driving power cars that have been modified to run on LNG in addition to diesel. By replacing about 40% of traditional diesel with LNG, this train becomes not only more fuel-efficient but also cleaner for the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The project involved retrofitting two 1,400 HP Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) power cars with approximately 2,200-litre LNG tanks.Dual-Fuel Efficiency: The system replaces nearly 40% of conventional diesel consumption with Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Range: A single full tank enables the train to cover up to 2,200 kilometres, offering high flexibility for regional passenger services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Seamless Switching: The engine can automatically switch between LNG and diesel depending on availability, maintaining the same power and reliability as traditional engines. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The train significantly lowers carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and particulate matter emissions, improving air quality along its routes.Cost Savings: Indian Railways estimates annual savings of approximately \u20b911.9 lakh per power car.
