In its submission to the Group of Ministers, the body argued that the move is unconstitutional, historically untenable and politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What did the GoM propose?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The GoM report (November 2025) suggested\u00a0<strong>including six communities<\/strong>\u00a0in the\u00a0<strong>ST list<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It even proposed\u00a0<strong>sub-categorisation<\/strong>\u00a0of the 6 communities as\u00a0<strong>ST (Plain), ST (Hill) and ST (Valley)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stated aim was to address long-pending demands for social and political justice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key points:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>panel of the Assam Chamber of Commerce, Trade and Industry (ACCTI\/CCTOA)<\/strong> has <strong>rejected the proposal<\/strong> to grant <strong>Scheduled Tribe (ST) status<\/strong> to six communities in Assam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The six communities are:<strong>Ahom, Chutia, Koch-Rajbongshi, Matak. Moran, Tea Tribes (Adivasi)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The panel expressed concern that granting ST status could lead to <strong>complexities in reservation policies<\/strong>, affecting <strong>existing tribal communities\u2019 rights and opportunities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It warned about possible <strong>social and economic repercussions<\/strong>, including competition over limited government benefits.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The organisation urged the government to take a <strong>balanced and careful decision<\/strong> after considering all stakeholders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The issue of ST status for these communities has been a <strong>long-standing demand<\/strong> and remains politically sensitive in Assam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussions are ongoing at government and policy levels before any final decision is taken.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rejection by the Consultative Group of the Coordination Committee of Tribal Organizations of Assam (CCTOA) has put the proposal to grant ST status to six communities under sharp scrutiny.
