Lawspet legislator V.P. Sivakolundhu took over as the Speaker of\nthe 14th Assembly on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As soon as the House assembled for the day, government whip\nR.K.R. Anantharaman occupied the chair to announce the unopposed election of\nMr. Sivakolundhu, who previously served as Deputy Speaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Anantharaman said six sets of papers proposing and nominating\nMr. Sivakolundhu as Speaker were received by the Assembly Secretariat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He then requested Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy and Ministers\nto accompany the chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr. Narayanasamy said the Speaker\u2019s post was occupied in the\npast by notable politicians such as M.O.H. Farooq, V. Sabapathy and V.\nVaithilingam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was certain that Mr. Sivakolandhu would uphold the dignity of\nthe chair and be just to the members of the ruling party and the Opposition,\nMr. Narayanasamy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Flaying the Opposition for boycotting a solemn occasion, he said\nthere was no truth in their argument that the Speaker\u2019s election was held in an\nunfair manner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the All-India N. R Congress won the 2011 Assembly\nelections, the government announced its decision to elect the Speaker on June\n26. The date for the election was fixed for June 29. Only two days\u2019 time was\ngiven to file nominations, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minister for Public Works A. Namassivayam, Minister for Social\nWelfare M. Kandasamy, Minister for Power R. Kamalakannan and DMK leader R. Siva\nwere among those who complimented the new Speaker<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Sivakolundhu said he would conduct\nthe Assembly proceedings in a fair manner and that the House was the only place\nwhere members could discuss issues faced by the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the session was adjourned sine die<\/em>, Mr.\nVaithilingam, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Puducherry seat,\nsubmitted his resignation as Member of the Legislative Assembly representing\nKamaraj Nagar.\n\nOnce the Assembly\nSecretariat notified the vacancy, the Election Commission would announce the\ndate for the bypoll in Kamaraj Nagar constituency.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Lawspet legislator V.P.
