The\nfirst tourist train traveling through Russia’s Arctic region and on to Norway\nset off from Saint Petersburg station Wednesday with 91 passengers aboard for\nthe inaugural trial journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The\nArctic fascinates everybody,” said Nurlan Mukash, executive director of\nthe German Lernidee Erlebnisreisen tour group behind the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“This\ndestination has been covered by Canadian and Norwegian tourist agencies but,\nthis has not been the case for Russia,” he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\ntrain, named “Zarengold” (“The Tsar’s gold” in German)\ncomplete with two restaurant cars will travel from Saint Petersburg through\nPetrozavodsk, the historic town of Kem and Murmansk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At\nMurmansk, by far the largest city north of the Arctic Circle, the tourists will\nget off the train and continue by bus to Kirkenes in Norway before ending their\njourney with a boat trip to Oslo or by air to the island of Spitsbergen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The\nwhole trip will take 11 days and allow passengers to discover areas difficult\nto access by other means, according to the organizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For\nthe inaugural ” test journey” the 91 tourists came from seven\ncountries including the US, Germany, Norway and Russia.
