US authorities<\/strong> said that there was a sharp 10% decline <\/strong>in the approval of H-1B visas<\/strong> by\nthe U.S. in 2018,<\/strong> which\nis popular among highly skilled Indian IT\nprofessionals. <\/strong>The experts attributed to the aggressive\npolicies of the Trump administration to clamp down on the use of the work visa\nprogramme.

What\nis H-1b Visa?<\/strong>
\nThe H-1B visa programme is the main vehicle\nthrough which US\nemployers can sponsor skilled foreign <\/strong>workers for\nadmission. It is a non-immigrant\nvisa <\/strong>that allows U.S. companies to employ foreign workers\nin specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. <\/strong>

10%\ndecline in approval rate:<\/strong>
\nIn 2018, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration\nServices (USCIS) approved 3,35,000\nH-1B visas<\/strong>, both new and renewable. This was 10% less than the 3,73,400 visas<\/strong> approved\nin the previous fiscal year of 2017, according to the USCIS\u2019 annual statistical\nreport. The approval rate of H-1B declined from 93% in 2017 to 85% in\n2018. 
\nFor the first six months<\/strong> of the fiscal year\n2019, the overall approval rate of the H-1B visa<\/strong> for new and continuing\nvisas continued to stay to 79%\nby the end of March<\/strong>, down from 85% last year.
