The day was declared in<strong>&nbsp;2008<\/strong>. June 8 was\nmarked as it marks the day when it was first proposed in 1992 by<strong>&nbsp;Canada&#8217;s International Centre\nfor Ocean Development (ICOD) and the Ocean Institute of Canada (OIC)&nbsp;<\/strong>at\nthe<strong>&nbsp;Earth Summit<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>UN Conference on Environment and\nDevelopment (UNCED)&nbsp;<\/strong>in<strong>&nbsp;Rio de Janeiro, Brazil<\/strong><br>\nThe Conference supported the implementation\nof&nbsp;<strong>Sustainable\nDevelopment Goal (SDG) 14<\/strong>&nbsp;of the 2030 Agenda for\nSustainable Development: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and\nmarine resources for sustainable development.<br><br><strong>Theme\n2019:<\/strong><br>\nThe theme for the year 2019 is&nbsp;<strong>Gender and Oceans<\/strong>. The\ntheme is to build greater ocean and gender literacy and to discover possible\nways to promote gender equality in ocean-related activities such as marine\nscientific research, fisheries, labour at sea, migration by sea and human\ntrafficking, as well as policy-making and management.<br>\nThe importance of gender equality is being\nrecognized increasingly for the effective conservation and sustainable use of\noceans, seas, and marine resources. Yet very little data and researches are\navailable on these issues. Serious action towards gender equality and the\nempowerment of women and girls is still needed in all ocean-related sectors to\nachieve&nbsp;<strong>Sustainable\nDevelopment Goal 5.<\/strong><br><br><strong>Plastic\nPollution:<\/strong><br><strong>Mar\u00eda\nFernanda Espinosa,<\/strong>&nbsp;the\nPresident of the General Assembly launched&nbsp;<strong>Play It Out&nbsp;<\/strong>which is a global\ncampaign against plastic pollution. Decades of overuse of&nbsp;<strong>single-use plastics&nbsp;<\/strong>has\ncaused a huge menace to the marine lives. 13,000,000 tonnes of plastic leak\ninto the ocean every year which kills&nbsp;<strong>100,000 marine animals annually.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nWhile most plastics are expected to remain\nintact for decades or centuries after use. These plastics erode and ends up as\nmicro-plastics, consumed by fish and other marine wildlife, quickly making\ntheir way into the global food chain\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>World Oceans Day&nbsp;is celebrated on&nbsp;8th June&nbsp;every year.
