Chaukhandi Stupa,<\/strong> an ancient Buddhist site located in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh<\/strong>,\nhas been declared as a Monument\nand protected area of national importance<\/strong> by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).<\/strong>

Chaukhandi\nStupa:<\/strong>
\nChaukhandi Stupa is a lofty mound of brick whose\nsquare edifice is surrounded by an octagonal tower. It was built to mark the\nplace where Lord Buddha met his first disciples as he traveled from Bodhgaya to\nSarnath.
\nThe Chaukhandi Stupa is said to be originally a\nterraced temple during the Gupta period, that 4th to 6th Century.
\nGovardhan,the son of Raja Todarmal gave the\npresent shape to the Chaukhandi Stupa.He built an octagonal tower to\ncommemorate the visit of Humayun,the great Mughal ruler.

Archaeological\nSurvey of India (ASI):<\/strong>
\nASI was formed on 1861<\/strong>, headquartered\nat New Delhi,\nIndia.<\/strong> ASI is the premier organization for the archaeological researches <\/strong>and protection of the cultural heritage<\/strong> in\nIndia. It functions under the Ministry\nof Culture. <\/strong>
