Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has been inaugurated as only the\nsecond elected president in Kazakhstan’s history, after winning polls marred by\na police crackdown and slammed by foreign monitors for “widespread voting\nirregularities.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Tokayev, the hand-picked successor to longtime ruler\nNursultan Nazarbayev, pledged that “different opinions, united\nnation” would be the slogan of his presidency, during the ceremony in the\nrecently renamed capital Nur-Sultan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 66-year-old career diplomat Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was\nshown kissing the state flag in a ceremony broadcast on state television that\nwas presided over by Nursultan Nazarbayev and marked in ceremonial pomp by the\nnational anthem and artillery salutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I solemnly swear to faithfully serve the people of\nKazakhstan, strictly follow the Constitution and the laws of the Republic of\nKazakhstan, guarantee the rights and freedoms of citizens (and) conscientiously\nfulfil the high duties entrusted to me,” Mr Tokayev said as he took\nhis presidential oath.\n\nNursultan Nazarbayev’s announcement in March\nthat he was stepping down from the presidency and naming Mr Tokayev interim\nleader shocked Kazakhs who had lived under his rule since Soviet times.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
