\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAuthor Amitav\nGhosh<\/strong>was conferred the 54th Jnanpith Award.<\/strong> He\nwas awarded for his contribution to the enrichment\nof Indian literature in English <\/strong>at a ceremony. The award\nwas presented by the former governor of West Bengal Gopalkrishna Gandhi <\/strong>in\nNew Delhi on 13 June. Amitav Ghosh is the first\nEnglish writer <\/strong>to get this prestigious  Jnanpith\nAward

Amitav\nGhosh:<\/strong>
\nAmitav Ghosh is an Indian writer.<\/strong> He\nis best known for his work in English fiction. In 2007, the government of India\nawarded him the civilian honour\nof Padma Shri. <\/strong>He also received the Israeli Dan David\nPrize, together\nwith Margaret Atwood.<\/strong>
His\nworks and awards:<\/strong>
\nHis book, The Circle of Reason<\/strong> won the Prix M\u00e9dicis \u00e9tranger<\/strong> which\nis France’s top literary awards. 
\nHis work ‘The Calcutta Chromosome’<\/strong> won\nthe Arthur C.\nClarke Award for 1997. <\/strong>
\nAlso, his work ‘Sea of Poppies’<\/strong> was\nshortlisted for the 2008\nMan Booker Prize. <\/strong>
\nThe book ‘River\nof Smoke’ <\/strong>was shortlisted for the Man Asian Literary Prize 2011. <\/strong>

\nJnanpith Award:<\/strong>
\nThe Jnanpith\nAward<\/strong> is an Indian\nliterary award.<\/strong> It was instituted in 1961.<\/strong> The\naward was sponsored byBharatiya\nJnanpith<\/strong>, a literary research organization. It is presented\nannually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their outstanding\ncontribution towards literature. The award is bestowed only on Indian writers <\/strong>who\nwrites in Indian languages that are included in the Eighth Schedule to the\nConstitution<\/strong> of India and English, with no posthumous\nconferral.
G.\nSankara Kurup<\/strong> was the first\nwho received the award\nin 1965.<\/strong> The award consists of a citation plaque, a cash\nprize of Rs.12 lakh (around), and a bronze replica of Saraswati, the Hindu\ngoddess of knowledge and wisdom\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
