The award\nwas presented by the former governor of&nbsp;<strong>West Bengal Gopalkrishna Gandhi&nbsp;<\/strong>in\nNew Delhi on 13 June. Amitav Ghosh is the<strong>&nbsp;first\nEnglish writer&nbsp;<\/strong>to get this prestigious &nbsp;Jnanpith\nAward<br><br><strong>Amitav\nGhosh:<\/strong><br>\nAmitav Ghosh is an&nbsp;<strong>Indian writer.<\/strong>&nbsp;He\nis best known for his work in English fiction. In 2007, the government of India\nawarded him the civilian&nbsp;<strong>honour\nof Padma Shri.&nbsp;<\/strong>He also received the Israeli Dan David\nPrize,<strong>&nbsp;together\nwith Margaret Atwood.<\/strong><br><strong>His\nworks and awards:<\/strong><br>\nHis book,&nbsp;<strong>The Circle of Reason<\/strong>&nbsp;won the<strong>&nbsp;Prix M\u00e9dicis \u00e9tranger<\/strong>&nbsp;which\nis France&#8217;s top literary awards.&nbsp;<br>\nHis work&nbsp;<strong>&#8216;The Calcutta Chromosome&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;won\nthe&nbsp;<strong>Arthur C.\nClarke Award for 1997.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nAlso, his work<strong>&nbsp;&#8216;Sea of Poppies&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;was\nshortlisted for the&nbsp;<strong>2008\nMan Booker Prize.&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nThe book<strong>&nbsp;&#8216;River\nof Smoke&#8217;&nbsp;<\/strong>was shortlisted for the&nbsp;<strong>Man Asian Literary Prize 2011.&nbsp;<\/strong><strong><br>\n<br>\nJnanpith Award:<\/strong><br>\nThe<strong>&nbsp;Jnanpith\nAward<\/strong>&nbsp;is an<strong>&nbsp;Indian\nliterary award.<\/strong>&nbsp;It was instituted in<strong>&nbsp;1961.<\/strong>&nbsp;The\naward was sponsored by<strong>Bharatiya\nJnanpith<\/strong>, a literary research organization. It is presented\nannually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith to an author for their outstanding\ncontribution towards literature.
