A ban has come into force\nprohibiting commercials that reinforce gender prejudices. A prominent German\nfeminist told DW that Germany is dragging its heels on the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The nation’s advertising\nwatchdog introduced the ban because it found evidence suggesting that\nadverse stereotypes could “restrict the choices, aspirations and\nopportunities of children, young people and adults and these stereotypes can be\nreinforced by some advertising, which plays a part in unequal gender\noutcomes.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Advertising Standards Authority\u00a0(ASA) chief executive Guy Parker told the BBC:\u00a0“Our evidence shows how harmful gender stereotypes in ads can contribute to inequality in society, with costs for all of us. Put simply, we found that some portrayals in ads can, over time, play a part in limiting people’s potential.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Examples of\ncommercials that will be affected include an advert showing a man with his feet\nup while a woman cleans, as well as another with a woman struggling to\npark a car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However,\nnot everyone agrees with the ban. Newspaper columnist Angela Epstein thinks\nthat society has become “over-sensitive.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She told\nthe BBC: “There’s a lot of big things we need to fight over \u2014\nequality over pay, bullying in the workplace, domestic violence, sexual\nharassment \u2014 these are really big issues that we need to fight over\nequally.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Epstein\ncontinued: “But when you chuck in the fact that women are doing the dishes\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
, it’s not in the same sphere. When we lump it all together\nand become desensitized, we devalue those important arguments we need to have.\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Stevie\nSchmiedel from Pinkstinks, an organization against sexism and\nhomophobia, told DW that Germany is lagging behind and says the\nGerman Advertising Standards Council (Deutsche Werberat) is not proactive\nenough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When asked\nif similar advertising would be forbidden in Germany, she responded:\n“The Deutscher Werberat would never suggest such a thing. The\nWerberat are mainly reactive, whereas in the UK, ASA commission research.\nThe ASA is taken very seriously.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Schmiedel\nadded: “German ads are often more sexist than British ones.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Having\nconducted a similar investigation, Schmiedel said: “Advertising is\nthere to influence you. If you see the same stereotypes over and over again,\nyou will compare it to yourself and see whether you match the stereotype.”\n\n“As a little\ngirl, if you always see slim princesses looking into the camera all\ngooey-eyed, looking as if they want to serve you, want to please you, that will\naffect the way you are raised,” she said. “On the other hand,\nboys are always seen in action, kicking a football for example, not looking\ninto the camera.”\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
