The plant, known commonly as \u2018dancing ladies\u2019 or \u2018swan flowers\u2019 was thought to have been extinct until its \u201cre-collection\u201d, for the first time since 1875.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gkseries.com\/blog\/current-affairs-quiz-2019-daily-gk\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"undefined (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><strong>Daily Current Affairs Quiz 2020<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key-Points<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Globba andersonii are characterised by white \ufb02owers, non-appendaged anthers (the part of a stamen that contains the pollen) and a \u201cyellowish lip\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The earliest records of the collection of this plant were dated between the period 1862-70 when it was collected by Scottish botanist Thomas Anderson from Sikkim and Darjeeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, in 1875, the British botanist Sir George King, had collected this taxon from the Sikkim Himalayas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant Globba andersonii is commonly known as \u2018dancing ladies\u2019 or \u2018swan flowers\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Classified as \u201ccritically endangered\u201d and \u201cnarrowly endemic\u201d, the species is restricted mainly to Teesta River Valley region which includes the Sikkim Himalayas and Darjeeling hill ranges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant usually grows in a dense colony as a lithophyte (plant growing on a bare rock or stone) on rocky slopes in the outskirts of evergreen forests.
