Now, this footwear is all set to get trendy. With\nthe Geographical Indication (GI) tag boosting its power, authorities want to\npromote the made-in-Karnataka footwear here and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation (LIDKAR)\nplans to help artisans export the chappals and also tie up with e-commerce\ngiants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The approval for GI tag was jointly received by Karnataka and Maharashtra\nrecently for making these chappals. There is a perception that these artisans\nare from Maharashtra alone, but a large number of them are from Karnataka, and\nhave been making these chappals for centuries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to LIDKAR officials, there are 5,000 people from villages in\nBelagavi, Bagalkote and even Dharwad making Kolhapuri chappals at their houses.\nTheir market is restricted to nearest towns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs these chappals are made in both the states, Maharashtra and Karnataka\njointly applied for GI tag last year and a few weeks back it was approved. With\nGI tag, these artisans get legal support. Anyone who is going to copy this can\nbe punished,\u2019\u2019 K Thippeswamy, Chief Manager of LIDKAR, told TNIE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These leather chappals are hand-crafted and tanned using vegetable dyes. The\nart of making them is passed down one generation to another. The traditional\nchappal making will get a modern touch. LIDKAR has in-house fashion designers\nwho will design the footwear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlong with Visvesvaraya Trade Promotion Centre, LIDKAR will go to these\nvillages. Each artisan will get an authorised user certificate for GI. With\nthis, they can export chappals they make,\u2019\u2019 LIDKAR Managing Director H Nataraj\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are approaching Amazon and Flipkart. Once we tie up with them, artisans\nwill get a better market for their products,\u2019\u2019 officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Geographical Indications (GI) tag<\/strong>:<br>\nA geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which\ncorresponds to a specific geographical location or <strong>origin<\/strong>.<br>\n<strong>Darjeeling tea<\/strong> became the <strong>first <\/strong>GI tagged\nproduct in India, in 2004-05, since then by october 2018, 321 had been added to\nthe list.<br>\nThe GI tag is valid for a period of 10 years.
