It was the first time Mauritanians voted to\nelect a successor to a democratically elected president in the West African\nstate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mauritania&#8217;s ruling party candidate Mohamed Ould\nGhazouani, a former general and defense minister, won the\ncountry&#8217;s&nbsp;presidential election with 52%&nbsp;of the vote, the electoral\ncommission announced Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ghazouani&#8217;s nearest rival, prominent anti-slavery\nactivist Biram Dah Abeid, came in second&nbsp;with 18.58% of the vote. Sidi\nMohamed Ould Boubacar, who is backed by the country&#8217;s biggest Islamist party,\ncame&nbsp;in third with 17.87%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Ghazouani won an absolute majority in the first round\nof the presidential election, the top two contenders&nbsp;will not face off in\na runoff election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier on Sunday,&nbsp;Ghazouani declared himself the\nwinner of the Saturday polls. Mauritania&#8217;s government also declared victory for\nthe former general and congratulated him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Opposition candidates reject\nresults<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking at a news conference with three other candidates, Boubacar said that &#8220;multiple irregularities eliminated any credibility&#8221; of the election in the West African desert nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We reject the results of the election and we\nconsider that they in no way express the will of the Mauritanian people,&#8221;\nhe said, vowing that the opposition would use &#8220;every legal means&#8221; to\nchallenge them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposition candidates had earlier said they would contest\nthe results if the ruling party won the first round of the election outright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This seems like a coup d&#8217;etat,&#8221; Abeid said at\na press conference, representing himself and the other opposition\nleaders.&nbsp;&#8220;We are united and will lead the contestation [of the\nresults].&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About Mauritania:&nbsp;<\/strong><br>\nCapital: Nouakchott&nbsp;<br>\nCurrency: Mauritanian ouguiya<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mohamed Ould Ghazouani has won Mauritania&#8217;s presidential election with an absolute majority.
