The International Olympic Committee has formally opened its\n145 million Swiss francs ($145 million) new headquarters exactly 125 years\nafter the Olympic Games was revived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“On our 125th anniversary, we\nclearly see what a great visionary Pierre de Coubertin was,” IOC President\nThomas Bach told guests Sunday at the inauguration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“By bringing the\nentire world together in peaceful competition, the Olympic Games are a symbol\nof hope and peace for all humankind,” Bach said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A ceremony in the\nlakeside grounds of Olympic House in Lausanne including a playing of John\nLennon’s song Imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bach cited Lennon’s\nlyrics when he said of De Coubertin: “You could say, he was a dreamer. But\nhe was not the only one. This peaceful world, which John Lennon asks us to\nimagine, this peaceful world is what we all are working for.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The rooftop takes\nthe shape of a dove, another universal symbol of peace,” said Bach.\n“The whole design is intended to make the building welcoming and to\nreflect our transparency.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Olympic House was built\non the site of the former headquarters, and 95 percent of the old materials\nwere reused and recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The signature feature is\na central staircase linking together the five Olympic rings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Designed by architecture\nfirm 3XN of Denmark, the energy-efficient building has won international awards\nfor sustainability. Renewable energy is provided using solar panels on the roof\nand pumps taking water from Lake Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It also brings around 500\nIOC employees under one roof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
IOC members have also\ngathered in Lausanne to choose the 2026 Winter Games host on Monday. The\ncandidates are Milan-Cortina from Italy and Stockholm-Are from Sweden<\/p>\n\n\n\n
