Veyil Marangal (Trees Under the Sun), directed by Bijukumar Damodaran, won\nthe award for \u2018Outstanding Artistic Achievement\u2019 at the 22nd Shanghai\nInternational Film Festival, becoming the first Indian film to win a major\naward at the festival. The film was one among the 3,964 entries submitted from\n112 countries in the prestigious Golden Goblet Award competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the award was announced at a packed hall, Indrans, who plays the lead\nrole in the film, stood up and hugged the director. For Indrans too, this came\nas a major achievement in one of his first appearances at an international film\nfestival. Saritha Kukku and Master Govardhan are the other actors in the film.\nSpeaking to The Hindu <\/em>over phone from Shanghai, Mr. Bijukumar said he\nwas glad that a jury headed by Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan, known for\nhis slow-burning classics, had chosen his film for one of the major awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is a big thing for us and for Malayalam cinema at a major\ninternational festival. Veyil Marangal<\/em> focusses on a Dalit family from\nKerala which loses everything in a major flood. They migrate to Himachal in\nsearch of livelihood at an apple orchard. The film was shot over a duration of\none and a half years. It was shot across three different season in Himachal,\nwhere the location was mostly around Manali,\u201d said Mr. Bijukumar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A review in \u2018The Hollywood Reporter\u2019 from its Shanghai premiere says that\n\u201cthe film\u2019s overall gentleness ultimately leads to a more realistic and\noptimistic conclusion that involves the dignity and perseverance of the\ndowntrodden but unbeaten family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis is the second film from Bijukumar to be screened at the festival after Akashathinte\nNiram<\/em> (Colour of Sky), which was selected here in 2012.
