To reduce\nIran\u2019s crude oil export to zero, the US ended on May 2 waivers that had allowed\nthe top buyers of Iranian oil, including India, to continue their imports for\nsix months.India, complying with the US sanctions, has ended all imports of oil\nfrom Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump congratulated Modi on his election victory and said that the two countries would work together in many areas including military.\u201dIt was a big victory, you deserve it, you have done a great job. We have big things to announce. In terms of trade, in terms of manufacturing, we would be discussing 5G. I congratulate you and I look forward to talks,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have become great friends and our countries have never\nbeen closer. I can say that with surety. We will work together in many ways\nincluding military, we\u2019ll be discussing trade today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Iran, Trump said: \u201cWe have a lot of time. There\u2019s no\nrush, they can take their time. There is absolutely no time pressure\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPM @narendramodi and @POTUS held talks on the sidelines of\nthe #G20 Summit in Osaka. Both leaders discussed various bilateral and global\nissues,\u201d the Prime Minister\u2019s Office said in a tweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two leaders met shortly after the Japan-America-India\ntrilateral meeting during which Modi highlighted \u201cthe importance India attaches\nto\u201d the grouping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Modi-Trump meeting assumes significance as the US president, championing his \u2018America First\u2019 policy, has been a vocal critic of India for levying \u201ctremendously high\u201d duties on US products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before his arrival in Japan on Thursday, Trump tweeted, \u201cI\nlook forward to speaking with Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi about the fact\nthat India, for years having put very high Tariffs against the United States,\njust recently increased the Tariffs even further. This is unacceptable and the\nTariffs must be withdrawn!\u201dThis was Modi\u2019s first meeting with Trump after the\nBJP\u2019s landslide win in the parliamentary election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India has raised tariffs on 28 items, including almond,\npulses and walnut, exported from the US in retaliation to America\u2019s withdrawal\nof preferential access for Indian products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration wants Prime Minister Modi to lower\nthe trade barriers and embrace \u201cfair and reciprocal\u201d trade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump has also criticised India\u2019s high import tariff on the\niconic Harley Davidson motorcycles as \u201cunacceptable\u201d though acknowledging that\nhis \u201cgood friend\u201d Prime Minister Modi has reduced it from 100 per cent to 50\nper cent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last February, India slashed the customs duty on imported\nmotorcycles like Harley-Davidson to 50 per cent after Trump called it \u201cunfair\u201d\nand threatened to increase the tariff on import of Indian bikes to the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government on June 21 last year decided to impose these\nduties in retaliation to the US decision of significantly hiking customs duties\non certain steel and aluminium products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>America, in March last year, imposed 25 per cent tariff on steel and a 10 per cent import duty on aluminium products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>India levied tariffs:<\/strong><br> Ministry of Commerce has announced to impose retaliatory tariffs on<strong> US goods<\/strong> that will be effective from June 16 onwards. The retaliatory tariffs on <strong>28 goods imported from the U.S. <\/strong>The Ministry initially decided to&nbsp;impose tariffs in 2018. The decision is ahead of the meeting between Modi and Trump on the sidelines of the <strong>G20 summit in Japan. <\/strong>The move made by the trade ministry was approved by the Ministry of External Affairs.<br> The tariffs will be applied on<strong> $220-290 million <\/strong>worth of goods that are imported from the US, and will have about the same impact as the tariffs imposed by Washington on India in 2018. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks with US President Donald Trump and discussed various bilateral and global issues including Iran, 5G communications networks, trade and defence ahead of the G-20 Summit.
